Hormonal Effects of Life Stages on Women’s Teeth

Puberty- Hormones during puberty can cause the small blood vessels in the gums to dilate, which in turn can cause bleeding and swelling of the gums. Some women may experience a more infectious type of bacteria in the mouth because of these hormonal changes. Pregnancy- The hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy may result in a higher tendency for bleeding and swollen gums as well as an increased chance of gum disease. Birth Control- Because the estrogen in birth control pills mimics that of a pregnant women, women using these forms of birth control can have similar side effects as those mentioned above. Menopause- Menopause can cause burning sensations in the mouth as well as a dry mouth due to the loss of hormones. Post Menopausal- Bone loss is an affect many women experience after going through menopause and the teeth may be affected as well.
How to Avoid These Dental Issues
To protect your overall oral health as well as prevent the progression of dental issues, women should take the following steps in order to maintain good oral hygiene: Proper Brushing- Brushing twice a day the proper way helps prevent oral health issues. This includes brushing the gum line gently and in a circular motion. Also be sure to brush the backs of your teeth as well as the tops of your molars. Brush your tongue or use a tongue scraper to remove excess bacteria from your mouth and replace your toothbrush every three months. Flossing Daily- Brushing should be accompanied with flossing to clean the sections between teeth that a toothbrush cannot. Don’t forget to floss behind your back teeth, as this area is commonly overlooked. Healthy Diet- Avoid sugary foods that can lead to tooth decay and heavily carbonated drinks. If you eat sweets or these types of foods try and brush afterwards or chew some sugar-free gum. Regular Dental Checkups- We recommend visiting the dentist twice a year to maintain your oral health and to catch small problems before they become painful and costly.
